Golden Rules That You Can Follow For Garden Maintenance

Gardens can form a beautiful heaven for anyone, for escaping the stresses and strains of reality for brief intervals. They can be of numerous types, based on the following:-

  • The time-period or historical-period. For instance, traditional gardens, modern gardens, the Mughal Gardens, the Roman Gardens.
  • The country where it originated. For example, the French Gardens and the Japanese Gardens and their different styles. It also depends on the type of plants and saplings that you choose for your garden. Hybrid varieties need special care.
  • The area for which it is specifically selected. This, for example, can be a front garden, back garden, courtyard garden, driveway garden, rooftop garden.
Other types can include flower gardens, woodland gardens, rock gardens, water-based gardens, or even ‘edible’ gardens.
But whatever the type, garden maintenance is applicable for all gardens. This can differ according to how elaborate it is or the types of plants or other items are chosen.

What Should You Do For Proper Garden Maintenance?

1) Designing and Planning the Space Properly

One of the first steps for garden maintenance is ensuring that the garden is planned properly to begin with. This more-or-less requires taking well-informed decisions with regard to the following—

  • Designating the exact area where the garden is going to be made
  • Designing the garden precisely according to the specific requirements of the trees, flowers, shrubs and other items selected
  • Knowing if there are surrounding areas that provide the potential for future expansion
These are likely to ensure that the garden flourishes and can simultaneously be maintained properly. A well-planned garden usually allows for easier garden maintenance, as careful and systematic maintenance of each section is possible.

2) Using and Maintaining Good Quality Soil

The good quality soil is essential for all plant-life to grow to its optimum level and thrive. Different types of trees, flowers, plants or shrubs need different types of soil to grow. This can include a specific combination of different varieties of soil. To this, particular types of fertilizers, minerals, and other substances can be added in certain quantities based on requirement. An essential part of maintaining the quality is checking it at certain intervals.

Water, Sunlight, and Natural Resources are Necessary For Plant Growth:

But intertwined with soil-requirements, are requirements for adequate quantities of water and possibly sunlight. Both form an essential part of garden maintenance, can vary greatly requirement-wise and affect soil quality. The possibility of leaching of soil nutrients can arise especially if plant-life requires large amounts of water. Exposure to, too much sunlight, can dry-out soil quickly and combined with the wind factor, cause erosion of topsoil. To greatly lessen them, ‘ground cover’ is used, with the type being selected according to requirement.

3) Making a Proper Garden Maintenance Schedule

  • Taking care of the garden at regular intervals is essential and ensures that it maintains its beauty. This includes regular removal of weeds and unwanted plants, and also knowledge of invasive plant species that wipe out garden-plant-life.
  •  Its good check if any are growing in the garden or surrounding areas and remove them immediately.
  • Pruning plants and removing dried leaves and flowers, at regular and timely intervals ensures proper growth. Digging-up and loosening soil allows for airing, and watering to the required extent prevents loss of nutrients and plant-life spoilage.

However, using and maintaining the right tools and techniques for garden maintenance is equally important. Such tools can include rakes, hoes, spades shovels and wheelbarrows, but they need to be used correctly and maintained properly.
