Where is the process of Rego inspection conducted?

They are performed at government authorized inspection centers and take about 30 minutes to complete and are valid for 6 months in total. Once you have purchased a CTP (Compulsory Third Party) green slip from your insurer and completed the rego inspection, you are allowed to renew your registration for another 6-12 months. Also, always be careful to check if the sign of AIS (Authorized Inspection Station) is legitimate or not that is displayed in front of the AIS station premises.

What are the Areas of Inspection?

Annual inspection or rego inspection exists for the sole purpose of inspecting and assessing a vehicle’s worthiness on the road which in turn affect a passengers safety.
  • Engine and driveline fluids
  • Seatbelt condition
  • Vehicle body condition
  • Brake efficiency test
  • Tread depth and tire quality
  • Suspension/ exhaust/ engine and driveline condition
  • Working of electrics: blinkers, dash lights, headlights and interior lights

If a Vehicle Fails in its Inspection, what happens?

If your vehicle fails in the rego inspection, you are not allowed to renew your registration until the said repairs are not made.
  • A white slip will be issued by the authorized inspection station inspector. This slip allows the owner of the vehicle to have the required repairs undertaken for the purposes of re-inspection with a time slot of 14 days.
  •  If the repairs are finished within the time period of 14 days, the vehicle can be reassessed from the very same inspection station with no sort of additional charges or check fees.
  • If necessary repairs are not made within 14 days, a new pink slip or safety check inspection fee will be required. When the vehicle passes the rego inspection, the report is electronically sent to the Road and Maritime Services.
  • People often do not understand the difference between Rego inspections and roadworthy certificate so they must have a clear idea before they go for rego inspections.

When do you get Unregistered Vehicle Permit?

If your current registration expires, then an Unregistered Vehicle Permit which will be required to drive the vehicle around, unless of course, you like your vehicle to be transported via a tow truck.
Also, when driving an unregistered vehicle it's important to make that you are following and are within all the rules and regulation or you might receive a number of police infringement notices more than $1200.

If your Vehicle is not Registered in NSW, what to do?

If the vehicle is not registered in New South Wales then you must have a blue slip or Authorized Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Scheme (AUVIS) Inspection before you can be registered. This inspection is done for the verification of all the safety measures of an unregistered vehicle at the same time making sure it meets its identity and design standards.

Keep in mind, that it is not necessarily important to wait until your current registration has expired or is near expired. One can take a pink slip or rego inspection anywhere up to 6 months before the current registration date expires.
