Plastic welding, like metal welding, utilizes heat to fuse the components. While welding is still generally associated with metal, it may be a proper technique when working with polymers that react badly to other kinds of bonding.

Lay-Up by Hand

Hand lay-up is one of the most fundamental variations of the custom plastic fabrication process. It is less expensive since it is open-mould (using a single concave female or convex male mould) and requires less equipment, but it is more labour-intensive because human employees are needed to aid in filling the mould. 

Hand lay-ups, as the name implies, entail sheets of material (typically a mesh, mat, or roving of fibres such as glass or carbon) called plies being inserted into the mould by hand, making a laminate stack. The plies are soaked with liquid resin, generally a polymer, and cured under pressure. Human workers are also commonly utilized to provide pressure using hand rollers. 

Dry plies are often used; however, pre-impregnated or pre-preg plies, which already contain a tiny quantity of resin, can also be used. The wet lay-up is a variation in which polish is applied after each ply is inserted into the mould rather than all at once at the end of the process. This process ensures that the resin is equally dispersed across all product surfaces.

From many respects, the spray-up is a mechanical, mechanized counterpart of the more labor-intensive hand lay-up. It is also an open mould with reinforcing fibres soaked by a liquid resin, which is often a polymer. On the other hand, a spray-up uses a pneumatic pistol to spray chopped fibers into the mold. Hand rollers are sometimes used to offer extra compression.

Manual lay-up and mechanical paint can be used together on the same mould to increase the finished product's durability. The mold is first lined with mesh or fabric, and then more chopped fibers (typically glass) are sprayed with spray cannon. 

It is crucial to note that the spray-up procedure is occasionally related to health hazards due to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the surrounding air, such as styrene. Workers working with the spray-up procedure should use extreme caution at all times.
