What are E-Bikes and how do they work

Invented in the early 1900s, bikes have come a long way. These days, there are hundreds of different models that are available in the market as far as bikes are concerned. Talking of their features, speed which they have to offer, comfort; the modern-day bikes are absolutely mind-boggling. These are one of the new additions to the world of bikes in an e-bike.

Well, e-bikes are relatively new in the market and they are gradually gaining popularity. It needs to be made clear right at the outset that e-bikes are not scooters. There are some major differences between the two. Imagine a regular bike, and then add multiple different types of electronic components to it; a motor for example, along with a controller and a battery. All these components are integrated into the bike’s design. That’s it! This is all an e-bike is all about. They offer a much more comfortable and easier ride as opposed to the regular bikes available in the market.

How do E-Bikes Operate?

As already mentioned, when it comes to the mechanism and operating fundamentals of an e-bike, there are lots of different types of electronic components that are involved in it. In terms of basic working mechanism, there aren’t many differences between the regular bikes and e-bikes. In E-bikes the paddle and handle had to be used in order to set it in motion. Basically, when it comes to an electronic bike, the same parts are used. The electronic components are meant to increase then human power which is put in to drive these bikes. In the case of a traditional bike, riding up a stiff road or getting past obstacles, at times can be very difficult and tiring. This is where e-bikes come into the picture. The electronic components installed in them provide extra power which makes life easier for the rider.

An Insight into Some of the Basic Components used in E-Bikes

E-bikes contain a motor, a battery, and a drivetrain. These are the 3 main electronic components are used in electronic bikes. Here is a brief insight into how they operate
  • Motor: There are primarily 3 different types of motors which are used in e-bikes, they are
    1. Front Hub: These motors are installed on the front tire of the bike and offer propulsion by spinning the tire.
    2. Rear Hub: This motor is installed in on the rear tire of the bike and it helps to push the bike forward. While riding up a stiff slope, this motor helps to generate additional energy
    3. Mid-Drive: This motor is located right at the center of the bike and they transmit power to the drivetrain of the bike
  • Battery: The batteries used in e-bikes are very powerful and they can offer up to 60 miles per charge. It is the battery which generates power for the motor
  • Drivetrain: Drivetrain comes into the picture when the wheels of the bike are intended to be turned manually.
