What Is Leather And How Is It Made?

Leather has been used for ages as clothing. Leather is a natural material that is made with raw skin and hides of animals and tanning it thereafter. It is made with the skins of several different animals, but the most common type of leather is made with cattle skin.  The leather manufacturing industry is very wide and its products range from small scale artistry to high-end leather suppliers and industry.

What Is The Process Of Leather Production?

The process of manufacturing leather is segmented into three separate basic stages, namely, the preparatory stage, tanning of leather, and final crusting.

Preparation: before making the leather ready to be carved into different forms, it's important to prepare it. So, the first step becomes the preparation of the animal skin. In this skin is treated with various chemicals and the proteins are removed so that the ski doesn’t decay. Thereafter it is followed by removal of hair and cleaning, bleaching and smoothening.  Also, the leather suppliers remove the excess of a layer of fat in this stage. This stage also involves the process of raising the PH balance of the skin to make sure that the tanning agents enter the skin.

Tanning: While processing animal skin, it is important that it should be treated such that anything which is causing the decay of the skin can be removed. The difference between a tanned hide and rawhide is that when dried, rawhide hardens and decays when it is moistened back while, when the tanned hide is dried, it turns into a flexible material and does not decay or putrid when it is moistened back. The tanning process can be done with several different agents. One of the most common of those is chromium. Good leather suppliers pay major attention to this part.

Crusting: As the leather approaches the final stages, it undergoes treatment where some part is dehydrated, while other is hydrated. In this coloring of the skin is also done so that it gets the desired color. It is dried in some parts and hydrated in others. Also, the hides are lubricated to give them a new and shiny effect.  The PH level is adjusted and fixed and so is the amount of all other proteins. The dying or coloring of the product is also finished here. All the unwanted and extraneous chemicals are extracted by the leather suppliers.

What Are The Different Types Of Leather Available In The Market?

One of the most common forms of leather is patent leather which is basically a very reflective material. It is highly glossed and shiny leather, which is being used extensively in the fashion industry for making shoes, handbags and so on.  Artificial leather, also known as synthetic leather, is another type, used quite often. It is a substitute for real leather and manufactured with common clothing fabrics.
