He is usually hired for installing any new electrical appliance or component or for maintaining any electrical section. These workers are generally qualified to the following three levels: Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master Electricians. They are appointed for two types of services; it is either for repairing, maintaining and wiring in buildings or for larger projects such as upgrading a complete floor or building. Other specialty areas are marine, hospital, research etc.
Some Commonly Used Tools by Electrical Workers
- Conduit bender: It is used to bend different electrical conduit. There are different kinds of benders like hand, hydraulic powered and electrical.
- Lineman’s Pliers: These pliers are used generally for bending, cutting, pulling wire and crimping.
- Non-contact voltage testers
- Diagonal Pliers or Dikes or Side Cutters: These pliers have sharp cutting blades which are mainly utilized on smaller gauge wires. They are sometimes used for gripping for removing staples and nails.
- Wire Strippers: This type of tool is similar to pliers and is available in various sizes and designs. These consist of sharp blades that can strip and cut wire insulation without damaging the conducting wire. Some strippers have cable strippers so that the outer cable jacket can be removed.
- Cable cutters: It is generally used for cutting large cables.
- Needle nose pliers: They have long conical gripping nose of different size and are used for finer work.
- Armored cable cutters: It is needed for cutting metal sleeve.

Safety Measures to Be Taken in to Account
These workers are involved in certain works which are often dangerous. There are often incidents of workplace hazards and thus safety measures should be of outmost importance. Sometimes, the electrician may encounter an electric shock due to faulty system or contact with high energy circuit. Therefore, they have to be skilled in such a way that they get minimum injuries.
Tag out and lockout procedures are mainly implemented for de energizing circuits. There are also equipment which offers personal protection against mechanical impact and also electrical insulation. The gloves which are used have shielding rubber liners which protect from electric shocks. Insulated tools are used for systems which cannot be de energized. Even work boots and hats used by electrical workers have protective components which prevent any fatal hazard and electrocution.
Working Conditions Needed by Electrical Workers
Different electrician workmen need different working environment depending on their specialization. Generally, these workers have very challenging duties like climbing ladders, carrying heavy tools and supplies. Sometimes they have to work in restricted overcrowded places where they have to bend squat or kneel frequently so that connections can be made successfully in odd places. Workers who work in construction plants may need to spend most of their days working in dirty and loud sites. Workers who work in industries are open to various chemicals, heat, noise and dust of the plant. Power system workers are summoned to work in any unfavourable conditions due to emergency and sudden repairs. Hence, the workers are to be proficient enough to work in all kinds of environments.
